Best Custom Firmware for the GKD Pixel 2 in 2026

By Tarik Caramanico · · 7 min read

The GKD Pixel 2 starts whatever system is on its microSD card, so choosing a firmware is as easy as writing a card, and you can keep several. At least ten systems run on it in November 2026. This is each of them, from what its own docs, code and releases say, with a pick for each kind of player. ZyperOS is ours, so we kept to those sources, linked every one, and wrote a dash wherever no source says either way.

The short answer

  • The most systems, released today: ROCKNIX. 120 systems, DraStic and PortMaster built in, updates over the air, and drivers for many USB Wi-Fi adapters.
  • The stock look, with more: ROGUE OS. The stock firmware's menus, improved, with DraStic, PortMaster and 13 launcher skins. Its last release is from August 2025.
  • Small, simple and released: TortOS. Eleven classic consoles, an installer for macOS, Windows and Linux, and a start in about two seconds.
  • A fast start, transfers from any browser, and battery care: ZyperOS. Forty systems and PortMaster ports, box art and video previews on the handheld, and a charge limit. Version 1.0.1 is out, with ZyperOS Installer.
  • A released system with many Pixel 2 touches: twigUI. A charging screen while off, side light modes, a list of tested Wi-Fi chips, RetroAchievements with hardcore mode, DraStic and PortMaster.
  • A big catalogue and a guided tour: muOS. A web dashboard for files, video previews, and a media player with live TV and radio.
  • Leave it as it came: the stock firmware works, with over a hundred system folders and PortMaster preloaded, but no scraper and no resume.

The table scrolls sideways; the row names stay put. A tick means it has it, a cross that it does not, and a dash that no source we read says either way. Hover over or tap a mark for more. The stock column is from Retro Game Corps' guide of February 2025. A system count is the systems in each project's own list, without tools, media players and ports.

ZyperOS

ZyperOS is made for the Pixel 2 alone. Its emulator stays running, so a game starts the moment you press A and picks up where you left it. It sends games from any browser over Wi-Fi or the USB cable, fetches box art and video previews on the handheld, signs in to RetroAchievements, and looks after the battery with a charge limit and a charging screen while off. It covers forty systems and runs PortMaster ports. It is free and open source, under the GPL-3.0 license, and version 1.0.1 is out, as a card image or with ZyperOS Installer.

The stock firmware

The Pixel 2 ships with a fork of ROCKNIX, with GKD's IUX menu and EmulationStation, and over a hundred system folders on its card. Retro Game Corps found it serviceable, with PortMaster working, but with no scraper, no quick resume and an unconfigured Pico-8. More on the stock firmware.

ROCKNIX

ROCKNIX is a Linux distribution for many handhelds, and it has supported the Pixel 2 since August 2026. It has the most systems here, DraStic and PortMaster built in, updates over the air, and a kernel that drives many USB Wi-Fi adapters. Its card is ext4 over the whole card, so a Mac or PC cannot read it; games go over the network or the USB cable instead. ZyperOS vs ROCKNIX.

ROGUE OS

ROGUE OS, by Ninoh-FOX, improves the stock firmware itself: a newer kernel build and RetroArch, Steward Fu's DraStic, PortMaster, music players and 13 launcher skins, for the Pixel 2 only. It installs in steps, from its first release's image plus the newest release's files. It set the bar for this handheld. ZyperOS vs ROGUE OS.

TortOS

TortOS, by Eric Reinsmidt, is a small, fast system for the TrimUI Brick and the Pixel 2, and where ZyperOS began. It plays eleven classic consoles, sends games from a browser over Wi-Fi or the USB cable, does RetroAchievements, and comes with an installer that also updates a card. ZyperOS vs TortOS.

plumOS Pixel2

plumOS, by game-de-it, keeps the stock boot path and kernel and replaces the rest: 86 systems, DraStic and PortMaster built in, A/B system updates from a file, and a list of tested dual-band Wi-Fi adapters. It is in testing. ZyperOS vs plumOS.

The others: Knulli, muOS, twigUI and MinUI

Four more systems have a Pixel 2 build. Their docs cover many devices at once, so this table uses what their build files and release notes say about the Pixel 2 where they say it.

Knulli is a fork of Batocera, and lists the Pixel 2 among its stable builds. Its scraper has three sources, its default theme plays video previews, and it has menu music built in. Its docs recommend the TL-WN725N for Wi-Fi, but its build does not give the Pixel 2 the Wi-Fi capability, so no source confirms Wi-Fi on this handheld. ZyperOS vs Knulli.

muOS, by MustardOS, has a Pixel 2 image in its 2606.0 release, with a guided tour, a Web Dashboard for files over Wi-Fi, video previews, PortMaster and DraStic. Its Pixel 2 runs a prebuilt Linux 5.10 kernel, and has no charging screen while off. ZyperOS vs muOS.

twigUI, from the spruceUI team, is a ROCKNIX fork with the spruceOS interface on top, with a Pixel 2 build. Its v1.1.0 has a charging screen while off, side light modes for the battery or the sound, rumble, a USB storage mode, a web page for files, RetroAchievements with hardcore mode, DraStic and DSperate, PortMaster, and a README list of tested Wi-Fi chips, the TL-WN725N among them. Parts of it are under non-commercial licenses.

MinUI for the Pixel 2, by NukeBomB3000, ports Shaun Inman's MinUI to the handheld: 16 systems and a music player. It runs on top of the stock firmware's Linux, has no rumble, and has had no release since May 2026.

How to choose

  • Do you need a system ZyperOS lacks? Check its forty. If yours is missing, ROCKNIX, ROGUE OS and plumOS cover more.
  • Do you want to add games without a card reader? ZyperOS and TortOS open a web page in any browser, over Wi-Fi or the cable. ROCKNIX uses Samba, SFTP and USB modes.
  • Do you play the DS? Every system here but TortOS and MinUI runs it.
  • Do you want something released today? ZyperOS, ROCKNIX, ROGUE OS, TortOS, Knulli, muOS, twigUI and MinUI are. plumOS is in testing.
  • Do you want Wi-Fi? Every system needs a USB adapter on the Pixel 2. The Wi-Fi guide explains which chips ZyperOS drives; plumOS and twigUI publish lists of their own.

Whatever you pick, the install guide shows how, and the stock card stays your way back.
